Oliver Bearman’s return to Haas for the 2027 Formula 1 season appears likely, but the team has not yet formally announced an extension. The delay is reportedly less about next year than about protecting the 21-year-old’s options beyond it.
Bearman said in Mexico that continuing with Haas was his goal, adding that the timing was not entirely in his hands and that “a few bigger picture things” were still being worked through. Haas team principal Komatsu also said both sides wanted to continue their partnership and were trying to find a solution for next season.
According to Autosport, the discussions concern Bearman’s position within Ferrari’s driver plans. Bearman has been loaned to customer team Haas, and the report says he could seek opportunities elsewhere if Ferrari cannot guarantee him a seat for 2028. Clarifying those longer-term terms may be necessary before Haas formally confirms him for another year.
Ferrari’s 2028 lineup is uncertain. Lewis Hamilton has exercised a contractual option to remain with the team in 2027, while Charles Leclerc has agreed to a long-term extension through at least 2030. Hamilton’s recent comments about his longevity have also made it less clear when he might leave Ferrari or Formula 1.
Komatsu dismissed rumours that Bearman’s pay demands were holding up an agreement as “absolute nonsense.” He said the two sides’ intentions were aligned, describing their relationship as one in which they work well together and help the team grow.
The reported challenge is therefore to secure Bearman’s place at Haas for 2027 without limiting his prospects for the following season. The parties are still working through that balance before making an announcement.
