The Audi Formula 1 team has officially announced that veteran engineer and director Beat Zehnder will depart the operation at the conclusion of the 2026 season. The 60-year-old Swiss national is set to exit the project entirely following a restructuring of operations ahead of the 2027 campaign.
Zehnder's association with the organization dates back to before its Formula 1 debut in 1993, making him a central figure throughout the Sauber era which Audi acquired to enter the sport. His career within the team began as a mechanic during its factory-backed Mercedes involvement in World Sportscars, eventually evolving into a role as team manager for much of Sauber's time on the grid.
Following Peter Sauber's departure from daily operations in 2012 and subsequent retirement in 2016, Longbow Finance took control of the team. Zehnder retained a senior position during this transition but moved to a factory-based role shortly after Audi assumed ownership. Over his career, he worked at 601 consecutive Formula 1 grands prix.
In a statement regarding his departure, Audi highlighted Zehnder's impact as a mentor to hundreds of drivers and team members who have passed through the Hinwil facility over the years. The team expressed gratitude for his 39 years of outstanding service and extended their best wishes for his future.
