Oscar Piastri has lost his seventh-place finish in the Mexico City Grand Prix after receiving a 10-second time penalty for a collision with Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad. The penalty dropped the McLaren driver to 15th, while Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto moved into the points.

Piastri started 12th after exiting in Q2 and worked his way into the top 10 before gaining places during the pit stops. On a Safety Car restart, Lindblad passed him, moving Piastri from seventh to eighth.

Piastri tried to retake the position around the outside at Turn 1. His front tyre made contact with Lindblad’s left rear, sending Lindblad into the barriers.

The stewards said Piastri was not fully alongside Lindblad on the approach to the corner and therefore had no right to the racing line. They found that Lindblad had left room on the outside and that the collision could have been avoided if Piastri had moved further left after Turn 1, even if that meant leaving the track before Turn 2.

The result leaves Piastri without points in Mexico City. It was his fourth non-scoring round of the season, following Australia, Hungary and Azerbaijan.
