Kimi Antonelli became the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix, a result that secured the 2026 Drivers’ Championship. He shared the podium with race winner Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton as celebrations began.

Verstappen praised Antonelli’s composure and achievement in only his second F1 season, highlighting that he had avoided major mistakes and beaten an experienced team-mate. The reigning champion called him a deserving winner. Hamilton described sharing the podium for Antonelli’s first title as a particularly special moment.

Lando Norris, whom Antonelli succeeds as world champion, said the Italian had exceeded expectations and deserved full credit for his season. Norris pointed to Antonelli’s hard work to understand and make the most of his car, adding that winning the title at 20 in his second season was remarkable.

Oscar Piastri also called the campaign impressive, crediting both Antonelli and Mercedes for delivering the car and support needed to compete. Charles Leclerc said the championship was fully deserved, while Carlos Sainz praised Antonelli for maximising his opportunity: he dominated the first part of the season and controlled the second, which Sainz described as the work of a champion.

Williams driver Alex Albon singled out Antonelli’s race pace and the progress he had made since the previous season. Franco Colapinto praised his consistency and ability to score points without making mistakes, while Gabriel Bortoleto said Antonelli had remained composed while competing against experienced champions. Bortoleto added that he hopes to fight for titles alongside him in the future.
